‘Vastu Shastra’ or the ancient Indian science of architecture, for ensuring happiness and prosperity of the residents of the house has not lost its charm even in the modern times. In fact, most of the modern homes are designed in accordance with the principles of Vastu.
Kitchen is one of the most important part of the house and the primary contributing factor in the general health and well-being of the occupants. The sense of calmness eludes the kitchen as it is always buzzing with energy, conversations and fragrances. The proper application of Vastu, transforms the complete chaos surrounding the kitchen into positive energy.
Food is the source of our energy, and it is important for it to be nutritious. But, besides that ‘Vastu Shastra’ lays down certain guidelines with regards to the design of the kitchen that ensures a happy meal and a happier life.
Following are few Vastu tips you should follow while designing your kitchen:
The position of the kitchen should not be under or above the puja room, toilet or bedroom. It should ideally be in the South-East corner of the main building or flat. The main kitchen platform should be in the East or South-East corner of the house and the stove or gas burner should be placed in the South-East, a few inches away from the wall and not right in front of the main door of the kitchen. If there is a dining table in the kitchen it should ideally be placed in the North-West or the West side.
As per Vastu, if the kitchen is in the North-East direction, it leads to discord in the house and the well-being of the people living in the house gets affected. If the kitchen is in the South-West direction, domestic harmony gets disrupted. If the kitchen is in the North-West direction, expenditure of the household tends to increase. The North side of the house is considered to be the place of the ‘Kubera’ or the wealth God. So, the kitchen should not be placed there because then maintaining it may lead to unnecessary expenses. Hence, the South East corner is the best position to construct or place your kitchen.
For keeping electrical appliances such as microwaves, mixer grinder etc. the extension of the kitchen platform in an L shape should be used. This placement is highly auspicious.
The wash basin (sink) of the platform should be in the north-east corner as far as possible. The pitcher for the drinking water and related utensils should be placed in the North-East or the North side of the kitchen.
Even if we ignore the Vastu aspect of it for a moment, ventilation in a kitchen is an extremely important feature, especially if you feel claustrophobic or uncomfortable in closed spaces. Also, ventilation is important to get rid of pungent and unwanted odour that might mar your appetite. Also in Vastu, these things are important in order to make a meal a delightful experience. There should be one or two windows or air vents in the East and the West directions of the kitchen. An exhaust fan installed in this vent would be very useful.
While cooking, one should ideally face towards the East and light utensils should be kept in the east or north side of the kitchen.
If you are planning to keep the refrigerator in the kitchen, it should be placed in the South-East, South, West or North directions. It should not be placed in the North-East direction. If it is in the South-West direction, it should be a foot away from the corner, so that the place is not obstructed.
When it comes to the storage area wherein you store utensils and other goods, it should always be positioned at the Southern or Western walls.
The flooring should ideally be ceramic tiles or marble tiles. It is better to choose ceramic tiles as they are mostly scratch proof and last longer than most others.
The colour of the floor and the walls of the kitchen can be painted yellow, orange, rose, chocolate or red. However, as far as possible, the floors should not be black in colour.
The kitchen should always be cleaned totally at night and all the utensils should be washed, as, unclean utensils attract flies and unwanted ailments.
Now, we have seen that kitchen is not merely a place to cook, but also an area that helps in balancing the energy and ensuring the well-being of the entire household. It is extremely important to follow the above mentioned Vastu tips for a healthy and hearty life in your house.
