Halt on SMS deliveries, Govt. Ban on SMS Gateways for 72 Hours

We will not be able to dispatch any SMSes for the next 72 hours because of a ban on SMS Gateways for next 72 Hours, imposed by Govt. of India as a precautionary step in the light of Ayodhya Verdit going out.

News Piece from The Hindu:

Bulk SMS, MMS banned ahead of Ayodhya verdict

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Wednesday banned all bulk SMS and MMS across India for next 72 hours with immediate effect in view of the impending verdict on Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suits by the Special Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, scheduled for Friday.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, has directed all mobile telecom services providers to ban all bulk SMS and MMS service across India till Saturday, which could be extended further if the need arises.

For individuals, bulk SMS would be above 10 per day, while for companies it could be 100 or more.

The Home Ministry has asked the Department of Telecom to issue such directions following apprehensions from the intelligence agencies that anti-social elements and rumour-mongers could use SMS and MMS services to create tensions and disrupt peace in the country, particularly in communally-sensitive cities and towns.

A senior Home Ministry official said intelligence and law enforcement agencies would also be monitoring the flow of SMS and MMS for the next three days, and anyone found guilty of creating tensions would be severely dealt with.

Mobile operators have also been asked to keep a watch on the flow of SMS and MMS and keep government agencies informed so that prompt and proper action can be taken.

Google and Firefox issuing malware warning on 19-Sept for CommonFloor.com

Yesterday morning we received emails from few of our well wishing users about the warning being shown by google and blocking of commonfloor page by firefox and chrome browsers.

This was reported to us around 10 in the morning.

What was observed?

Here is what google diagnostics reported:

Safe Browsing

Diagnostic page for www.commonfloor.com

What is the current listing status for www.commonfloor.com?

This site is not currently listed as suspicious.

Part of this site was listed for suspicious activity 1 time(s) over the past 90 days.

……

Has this site acted as an intermediary resulting in further distribution of malware?

Over the past 90 days, www.commonfloor.com did not appear to function as an intermediary for the infection of any sites.

Has this site hosted malware?

No, this site has not hosted malicious software over the past 90 days.

How did this happen?

In some cases, third parties can add malicious code to legitimate sites, which would cause us to show the warning message.

And Mozilla Firefox reported:

“Reported Attack Page

This web page at www.commonfloor.com has been reported as an attack page and has been blocked based on your security preferences.”

What action was taken by us?

By 10.30 Am IST we had identified the cause of the alarm and fixed the same. Although warning was not caused by CommonFloor server, we had quarantined the server and diverted all visitors to under maintenance page. At 11.00 am we reported to google for a rescan and review. Generally it takes 24 hours for a review, based on our escalated request a rescan was done within 12 hours and by 11.30 pm IST the warning had been removed.

As an added measure we also completed a security audit which reported no compromises.

What had happened?

As google had reported :” In some cases, third parties can add malicious code to legitimate sites, which would cause us to show the warning message”.

In our case the culprit was an ad server which was NOT the part of CommonFloor site.Advertisements are served from an isolated server, and no other CommonFloor services were affected at any stage. We deactivated the same. The vulnerability of the ad server was discovered and a patch was released on 18th Sept and Google had issued the warning to all sites which could be affected.

This issue had affect 1000’s of websites across the globe serving ads through that server.

Can I now safely browse Commonfloor?

Yes, your CommonFloor is completely safe to browse. In fact, it was a very small window of vulnerability which we closed as soon as we discovered the same.

You can rest assured that we have taken all necessary steps to keep your commonfloor and data safe. We also proactively keep a check of any new vulnerability discovered and update to patch up the same.

It was a humbling experience for us, for the fact that all the users who reported this to us did it out of the concern for CommonFloor. They themselves were confident of the services and wanted us to take appropriate actions to assure new users that this is a once in a blue moon kind of issue which would certainly be taken care of. Some of our users even suggested us pointers on what could technically be the issue and how we can detect a false positive.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused and  thank our users for their understanding, patience and support to keep their commonfloor safe and secure.
